CARTS
Craven Area Rural Transit System (CARTS) is the public transportation provider for the area
Fixed Route
Anyone is eligible to ride the fixed route system. No advance notice is required. Meet the bus at a stop, pay the fare and get off at your destination. There are three routes available Monday through Friday that transport passengers around set locations in New Bern. View the three route options
Demand Response
Demand response trips are available for those living in Craven, Jones and Pamlico counties. These trips require scheduling at least 2 business days in advance. Pricing varies for demand response trip. To get started, give CARTS a call to schedule a ride.
Changes to CARTS service
CARTS conducted a microtransit feasibility study in 2024 to determine if microtransit could replace the fixed route system. The study showed microtransit is a viable option. CARTS then began a lengthy public engagement period to educate the current and potential new riders on its services. During this time, a survey was released to understand transit habits and perceptions of the New Bern residents. This survey showed that many people use CARTS, find the service to be valuable, and want to see it expanded but microtransit may not be the right solution at this time.
We heard your concerns
Many people in our community rely on CARTS for daily transportation to work, medical appointments, and errands. The community feedback requested adding stops at a wider variety of businesses and to remove repeating stops and those with low ridership. We have modified the routes to be predictable and intentional and give passengers more freedom to go where they choose.
