The Surface Transportation Reauthorization Act of 2021

On May 26, 2021 the US Senate Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW) unanimously approved the Surface Transportation Reauthorization Act of 2021 (STRA-2021). This bipartisan bill is set for $303.5 billion over 5 years, the largest surface transportation reauthorization package in history. This is over a 34% increase from the last program, the FAST Act.

Included in the legislation:

  • $18 billion in climate programs

  • $6.4 billion for reducing greenhouse gas emissions

  • $8.7 billion to increase resilience to climate change and extreme weather

  • $2.5 billion to create alternative fuel corridors along the National Highway System

  • $500 million for a pilot program to reconnect and revitalize areas divided by highway construction posing barriers to economic development
